This is all similar to the convo we were having a/b young men getting seduced by the alt-right: I think there's def a way to treat frustrated/angry/lonely young men as human beings deserving of empathy w/o buying into crazy ideas that they "deserve" things other groups don't

Oh man I really disagree with that. I dipped a toe into incel communities like 6-7 years ago with an eye toward writing about them. These guys do not feel like the object of much empathy. There's some seriously profound darkness there.

I'm interested in articles about understanding jihadis and Nazis because there's something there that I don't understand and want to. But sexually frustrated young men? Thanks but I don't need the guidebook to that one.

There's a lot of overlap but yeah, the way some have rushed to indulge this kind of worldview stands in stark contrast to the general approach (often advocated by the same people) to something like Islamic fundamentalism.

It’s just like how the aughts taught us to talk about islamic terrorists. I can appreciate systemic failures that led to so many men being radicalized, without excusing the violence of an individual that was radicalized.

This is one of the worst takes I've ever seen on this site and that's saying a lot.
