this review is a great example of the cultural divide on superhero movies, one that reminds me a lot of the bosley crowthers of the 1960s trashing "bonnie & clyde" on its release. they really resent these shifts in taste and storytelling. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/avengers-infinity-war-reviewed-the-latest-marvel-movie-is-a-two-and-a-half-hour-ad-for-all-the-previous-marvel-movies?mbid=social_twitter …

then why wasn't it obvious at the time? why was there any disagreement about this "great" movie? warners chose to release it as an exploitation film in a period rich with them, and that's how crowther took it. beatty had to beg kael to see it for what it is. she saved it.

we're in a period glutted w/superhero movies, if there's a great one, it's in a big mix. as brody points out, marvel's are meant as a continuity (the lee-kirby kind you and I know well) so i'm not surprised the critical standard for that remains unagreed upon with film history.
