I feel like @jonkay needs to talk to @BarbaraRKay (Jon is broadly right, by the way, although better way to phrase it is that these mass murders almost never have a simple monocausal explanation even if there is explicit ideology at work).pic.twitter.com/e5VeAEij5U

I'm grateful @barbaraRkay wrote this: "I would have preferred it this had been an act of jihadism." It usefully clarifies how Islamophobes see the world and their active hunger for atrocities that justify that worldview.pic.twitter.com/uN6PSYO3YK

Kay "preferred it this had been an act of jihadism" because for her that makes the world easier to understand. But that's not even true since jihadism itself is not a simple thing.

Almost all recent mass shootings or terrorist acts are complex because they involve intersection of troubled and alienated personalities with ideology with social networks. Even if killer has explicit ideology (be it jihadi or Nazi) these factors still interact

If you are a reasonable person, simply saying "jihadi" doesn't explain anything because jihadis themselves are caused. But for Kay jihadis are simply motiveless, uncaused, non-social evil, so they make world easier to understand.

And of course alleged Toronto killer Alek Minassian does have ideology (if reporting holds up): "incel rebellion." Misogyny is an ideology, although Kay doesn't want to see that (for obvious reasons).

Which is not to say that Minassian's vile act was "caused" by his ideology. Because ideology is never simple causal lever. It exists in dynamic relationship with personality and social milieu. It's that complexity that Kay wants to deny.

          Jeet Heer Retweeted Jonathan Goldsbie

I think this is right: Kay's hatred of complexity (which she sees as disorder) is itself a political choice: it's a core component of conservatism:https://twitter.com/goldsbie/status/989201275572105216 …

Doesn't it also speak to conservatism more broadly — that psychic need for things to fit into recognizable categories (e.g., for Kay, gender roles) because they believe order is de facto superior to disorder?

          Jeet Heer Retweeted Chris Turner

Also a good point: the order/chaos dichotomy Kay borrows from Peterson is also heavily gendered:https://twitter.com/theturner/status/989204678360481792 …

Which is why it's particularly telling that Kay cited Jordan Peterson's thoughts on chaos without noting that he explicitly defines chaos as a feminine force

This gets at an interesting blind spot on the right and how it fails to understand misogyny or racism as ideologies. Jonah Goldberg has repeatedly mocked the left for reducing politics to materialism and government to technocracy.
