3. As I've argued many times, Jack Kirby was the major creative impetus for Marvel's explosion of worldbuilding in 1960s. But I do think Stan Lee (as editor & promoter) had more to do with wielding disparate creations into a universe.

14. All of which is to say that
@aoscott is, as always, spot on, in this in his suspicion of how the sprawling universe-ness of the Marvel universe itself defeats criticism.Show this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Black Panther & Winter Soldier are the 2 I consider the MCU's finest. Which ones would you call your favorite so far?

eh disagree, i think that the good netflix marvel movies are good specifically because they're relatively low stakes compared to the movies. 'street level' threats like killgrave are much more interesting than world destroyers

I finally saw "Black Panther" yesterday, and couldn't have found it duller. Marvel found a formula and beat it to death, and BP was the apotheosis of that.

Also the case with Guardians, and why their 2008 comics revival was so refreshing. The only link to the usual Marvel universe was skrulls and some references for the nerds, but overall it felt like a contained space odyssey.

Avengers and CA: Civil War are two of the most acclaimed MCU movies and they unreservedly lean into the shared universe. Recent hits Ragnarok and Homecoming freely invite outside elements into their space...

In other words, I don't think this claim stands up to scrutiny. Quality in the MCU seems orthogonal to whether the material draws on the universe as a whole or stays in its own corner; either can be done well, or poorly.
