Nope, still nonsense. Clinton's campaign focused on issues (including anti-racism, which is an issue!) Northam won because of personality! He got in on anti Trump sentiment. Negative partisanship is a tried and true platform.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/988457421084348416 …

Northam has centrist background but his campaign championed reproductive rights, $15 minimum wage & LGBT rights. More importantly, it was issue focused, not personality focused. A big difference from Clinton 2016

Almost all of Clinton's ads were variations on "Trump is a bad man" -- which was true but, at least in terms of winning electoral college, insufficient.

You keep saying this, but the *manner in which* Trump is a "bad man" is substantively important! And if there had been no Comey, it might have been "sufficient." That's not an excuse, but rather to say that it wasn't crazy for them to conclude their strategy would work.

there's also a lot of good evidence that negative partisanship motivates voters strongly, and little that positive messages work better in any straightforward way. https://www.thenation.com/article/why-negative-partisanship-is-a-good-thing/ …

Yes. What's frustrating is we can't know if Clinton's strategy would have worked without the extraordinary Comey misconduct. Again, not an excuse. But anyone reading meaning of outcome *without* acknowledging *possible* role of Comey isn't seriously grappling with what happened.

Agree that without Comey letter, Clinton strategy would've worked & Clinton would've won. But flip side is that Comey letter showed how fragile strategy was.

I think that's fair. On the other hand, the FBI director telling the country the Dem nominee is a criminal 11 days before the election is kind of hard to plan for

It really isn't clear what the alternative strategy would look like. Trump successfully took all and no sides of numerous policy issues during the campaign, so substantive policy-based arguments were mostly unavailable. The right argument really was "Trump is a bad guy"

Reaction to the unprecedented intercession of FBI Director is not indication of fragility.

Unprecedented influence in a GE by the FBI should have been planned for? Should this be strategy for every election now then? Should Bernie be worried about that FBI investigation into Jane then?

The problem with the fragile strategy characterization is that ANY strategy she pursued would've been fragile, because the fundamentals indicated a close election & a favorable environment for a GOP win. There was never any magic bullet that would have netted Clinton an easy win.

But how was Mrs. Clinton supposed to plan for Comey's unfounded allegations of criminal wrongdoing only 11 days prior to Election Day? Rather than play fools for scandal, the media ought to have instead been more skeptical of Comey's letter than they actually were at that time.

Dude, without Russia and WikiLeaks Hillary would have been assured of a landslide upon the arrival of Comey's letter.
