      1. This is a core reality of 2016 that is still insufficiently appreciated.https://twitter.com/jbouie/status/988186589263204352 …

And as I will say until I die, Trump’s explicit racism changed the grounds on which the election itself was being fought, and reorganized the electorate.

      2. I would add though that Clinton campaign recognized that racism reorganized electorate & had a response which was superficially plausible but didn't pan out: appeal to college educated disaffected GOP to replace lost white working class Obama supporters.

          3. Clinton's pitch to college educated white Republicans failed because of geography (not enough in key states), Comey letter (which made her look as bad as Trump). It also, I think, discouraged many working class POC who then stayed home.

          4. There's no way to know whether an alternative strategy (say more economic populism to win back WWC & also energize working class POC) would've worked. What we know is that Clinton strategy didn't work.

          5. 2016 was extremely close election to a fluky degree: 70,000 votes in 3 states. But that means many different factors plausibly tipped the scale.

          6. Going forward, best to see that this was an epic SNAFU which many parties (Putin, GOP, media, Comey, third parties, Clinton strategy) to blame. Would need more self-reflection from most of these parties.

This is one of the takeaways the Democrats should remember- that self-identified Republicans may hem and haw, but they eventually return to the GOP at the ballot box. If Trump couldn't shake that, nothing will.

If so then it was daft to give up on WWC Obama voters as too racist to vote for Hillary. They voted for Obama! There's an argument they voted for a nonwhite POTUS only because Romney was dogwhistling rather than overt. You may believe that but I find it implausible.

2016 was about cross-party vote suppression, and the contest was asymmetric. GOP voters turned out for their corrupt candidate in a bigger proportion than Dem voters did for their corrupt candidate (but arguably less so).

Hard to square a) Trump's racism reorganizing the electorate by b) stealing WWC *Obama* voters. Yes, racist ppl can vote for a black candidate, the same way they can have a "black friend", but it's hard to believe racism wld be a *main political driver* for many Obama voters. /1

I think it's much more likely that Trump's racism/xenophobia mobilized the GOP base - winning him the primary, legitimizing him via a major party nomination & bending party elites to his will. He then picked off *just* enough WWC voters in the industrial swing states to win. /2
