Even better: The Romans showed up, sieged one port city, Spartans surrender on condition of being allowed to leave unharmed, then fully surrender a few months later without a fight. The Spartans taking a look at the Roman army, going "lol nope", and surrendering is way funnier.

Reason for their isolationism: Spartan slavery was so brutal, even for the age, that they were perpetually on the verge of a slave revolt, so their men needed to be able to rush home quick. Other cities send men could further and for longer, and we're thus more effective.
