The picture that's emerging is that Michael Cohen, Trump's fixer, was all mobbed up, an American front man for Russian & Ukrainian mobsters.https://twitter.com/thehill/status/986779176907804672 …

Fusion GPS needed a larger budget because it is kind of crazy how little (if at all?) the Clinton campaign went after any of the Trump-mafia ties.

it's kind of insane how little attention Trump's mafia ties got from Clinton campaign and the American media!

how much money was spent on that ad about Trump mocking an NYT reporter? Trump's behavior was INDEFENSIBLE and thoroughly evil, but being horribly rude to a reporter vs. decades of Mob ties -- which is a stronger ongoing narrative more relevant to governance?

I understand this: That picture of Trump--and visuals matter more than words--was incredibly powerful. And the Mafia ties were a complicated set of serious allegations from decades ago which he just would have denied. Would have need something very visceral to break thru there.

Trump ran as a norm-breaking pragmatic business leader who would fix things that effete pols could not. Every time Clinton pointed out that Trump was norm-breaking she HELPED TRUMP. Profanity is the single best disguise for incompetence, cf. Rahm's entire career.

And I think the Trump mockery video is the epitome of the type of thing people say bothers them in a focus group because they believe they are supposed to say that. I don't think, in the 21st Century, rudeness hurts politicians.

Maybe--truth is, there a lot of un-empathic people, mostly men, who probably enjoyed it.

Alas lots of Trump voters enjoyed his boorishness, seeing it as honesty. Many of them also seem to have admired his mob ties, seeing it as sign of masculine strength.

Jumping from "people like Boorishness" to "they see paying off the Mob for protection" is... a leap. Trump *ran on boorishness,* so we know he thinks it worked for him. Trump did NOT run on paying off the Mob, hiring Mob flunkies, etc....

Trump ran on being a tough guy who has worked among "killers" and "sharks" -- I think people knew what that means.

Yeah, it's like the brutality to women--it's part of the package. Turns out you can be get 46% of the vote by being a barbarian because an enormous % of voting white men think that connects to them in powerful ways. Or, at best, doesn't really matter much.

Huh? You think the tv show "Shark Tank" is claiming to be mafia-connected? Those terms don't imply what you claim. America's risible business culture men insecurely compensate for shuffling paper with violent metaphors. But those are metaphors, not euphemisms for the mob.

It takes just a little bit of Overton-window pushing to change a metaphor into a euphemism into a belief. It helped a LOT that Trump was trading on white grievances, and "He's an asshole... but for US" could easily be morphed into "He's a criminal... but for US"
