      9. Will Eisner maintained, with reason, that Ebony White was created with affection. But was immediately controversial and Eisner's teenage assistant (Jules Feiffer!) hated Ebony & lobbied to get rid of him

      11. As historian Melvin Patrick Ely demonstrated in excellent book, when Amos & Andy created in 1928, it polarized black community. Some (particularly educated) hated but radio show also had a large black audience that loved.

      12. To speculate: black Amos 'n' Andy fans, generally belonging to the Great Migration from South to North, were so hungry for representation they took what they could want. Also, radio medium masked aspect of blackface (many thought A&A were black).

Amos 'n' Andy went to tv, where they were played by black actors. My mom and her siblings watched it because they were so grateful to see black people as leads on a tv show. 😔

Brian Ward’s excellent research on radio and the civil rights movements argued that even “slick talking” black radio personalities/DJ’s were detested by black respectability proponents

Yeah...provided some weight for my arguments about “inappropriate” Black media practice and respectability in the book

Respectability politics is a factor but not the only one. I think there was a shift in black public opinion on A&A from 1920s to 1950s among all classes.

I’m inclined to argue this if only cuz respectability folk were DEEPLY concerned w/popularity of these programs w/black working class The Black middle class desire to “modernize” media has always clashed (and lost) to Black folks joy in the sensual and by witty banter

Some black news outlets really emphasized best foot forward representation , others were split. Going back to 20s and white patronage of black art is in vogue
