Such a great thread & a beautiful, enlightening article at the end. Thank you so much for this. There is one typo in the essay I wanted to tell you about--mostly b/c it occurs in such a powerful line: "*be individuals" should be "*by individuals."pic.twitter.com/p0fAWX71Vj
Yes, but no. Look at that picture — white people should be offended for having ridiculous features (Homer’s head, Marge’s hair), and for being depicted as being stupid as can be (Homer, Bart, etc). This is only an issue bc the show has lasted so long.
I read the wonderful National Geographic on race cover to cover this week. It debunks the very concept. It also shows the capability of healing and change, even among peoples who have suffered real offenses, such as genocide.
Interesting thread. I think you make great points. Yet I just can't get riled up over Apu. FWIW I was in middle school when the Simpsons began — peak bully time. Apu was present for much of my late youth. But looking back, I really only have fondness for him and the show.
great work. thank you
As a child of the 70s, The Party made me think about immigrants trying to adapt to a White society. Sellers’ character is bumbling but has a huge, wise heart. You fall in love with him. He wins the girl but can’t win the girl. That injustice had a huge progressive impact on me.
Shut the fuck up Jeet
"Thomas is my uncle" is brilliant. Well done.
