I’m 65 (older than Apu creators), and I thought Apu was an ignorant stereotype at his first appearance. I don’t buy that offensive features were unrecognisable until younger people came by. They were willfully ignored.

I read a compelling post by a Desi blogger more than a decade ago about why Apu was problematic but great because he reflected so-called positive stereotypes and was objectively the best/most moral person in Springfield. Fits with the trajectory you describe.
