I was talking to a relative, an in-law who has lived in Russia & knows Russian, about "Death of Stalin." He loved movie but also came up with a bizarre pro-Beria argument.

Anyways, the argument was that Beria was a pro-market reformer. Like I said, I was dumbstruck.

What I'm learning from my TL is that there is actually a school of thought that argues Beria (rapist of children & architect of the terror) was a pro-market reformer.

The proper tankie line is that the problem with Beria is he was a neo-liberal sell-out.

I feel like the Federalist could write a piece praising his penchant for young girls

They love wives over at The Federalist. They also love non-consensual sex with said wives. I'm sure they'd write glowingly of Beria.

there's a somewhat decent case to be made that Beria was the target of a black legend after his death because he lost the power struggle, and that he wasn't *outstandingly* worse than some of the others - which is to say, still very bad indeed
-
People made the same case with Rasputin, actually

In real life they wanted Beria gone because he was willing to come to terms with West on GDR in exchange for a USSR-specific Marshall Plan; with control of KGB and money from the West he would have killed all of his rivals and ruled for another generation.

It's always weird hearing arguments about the Soviet Union that don't start from "the whole leadership was evil" - at least from an American perspective.
