I think they should have, but I'd also like to turn this around: Shouldn't Kevin Williamson have explained by now what his position is on this issue? Not like he's forced to remain silent while everyone is twisting their brains trying to figure out what he really thinks. https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/982994523910557697 …

That's kind of a crucial point. If he's being misrepresented, he has more than ample opportunity to explain what his real views are.

I would advise people *not* to justify themselves to online mobs, even if their views *have* been misrepresented. The reason being that it potentially encourages mobbing behaviour.

"on line mobs" being, in this case, people who accurately quoted the public words of prominent writer & judged him accordingly.

I generally agree with Claire about online mobs. But a lot of people, including ones who supported KW remaining at The Atlantic, have been debating what he really thinks. I think setting the record straight would be right in this case.

Also, he says in the Hillsdale talk that even conservatives have asked him about this (and were clearly troubled by it). If a distortion of your opinions is circulating out there, why not make a clear statement?

I'm kinda wondering if KW's dark side was getting a kick out of people being freaked out by his reputation as the guy who wants to hang women for having abortions.
