I would advise people *not* to justify themselves to online mobs, even if their views *have* been misrepresented. The reason being that it potentially encourages mobbing behaviour.

Conservatives are defending Williamson because they believe his position is perfectly reasonable, which is unsurprising since their position is 1) pro-death penalty for murder and 2) abortion is murder. This is made clear in Douthat's article in the NY Time's Sunday Review

Here's the thing: The belief that "abortion is actually premeditated baby murder," if taken seriously, would lead to a lot of conclusions not many on the right are willing to support, either. (Like "Blowing up abortion clinics is not only fine but a moral duty.")
