I REALLY believe that reporting, and understanding the mechanics of political reporting, are the path to great work — even if your ambition is writing essays/takes, or editing. I think that for everyone, including conservatives.
As I've said before, focus on pundits ignores fact that heart of journalism is reporters. National Review has done a good job of grooming reporters who go on to work for MSM (Costa, Alberta, Woodruff). We need more of that.
One of the historical functions of little magazines is to serve as a training ground for young writers to develop their chops. The New Republic has also groomed some fine writers (and a few dingbats).
That's such condescending bullshit.
Why is it condescending to point out that young writers need places where they can develop their skills by working with editors & small magazines have often served that function? That just seems an obvious pattern, with many examples.
TNR is my dream job too. I love working there. And part of what I love is that we are a place where young writers can hone their craft & find their voice.
Now you're condescending to young writers.
Wha??? Writing is a craft. There is no valuable craft that doesn't require honing & experience. Part of the excitement of watching is a young writer is seeing them develop & expand their range. How is that condescending?
So TNR is a vocational school where youths come to learn the trade. You cant have it both ways.
Sigh. We've gone over this. Publishing & nurturing young talent is not the same as being a vocational school. It's something that is worth doing as a way of making a good publication.
