I REALLY believe that reporting, and understanding the mechanics of political reporting, are the path to great work — even if your ambition is writing essays/takes, or editing. I think that for everyone, including conservatives.

As I've said before, focus on pundits ignores fact that heart of journalism is reporters. National Review has done a good job of grooming reporters who go on to work for MSM (Costa, Alberta, Woodruff). We need more of that.

One of the historical functions of little magazines is to serve as a training ground for young writers to develop their chops. The New Republic has also groomed some fine writers (and a few dingbats).

The real issue is resources. It's hard for smaller magazines to hold on to writers when they start getting offers from bigger outlets.

That I can live with. It's also hard for the Miami Marlins to hold on to talent when the Yankees wave dollars. That doesn't make the Marlins a training ground for the Yankees.

Alberta, Costa & Woodruff all did actual reporting for National Review.
