1. To judge by the right-wing freakout over Kevin Williamson you'd think that firing writers over extremist views was unheard of. But in fact Williamson's previous home National Review has repeatedly done that.

I think there's a little category confusion here. David French's line is that explicitly ideological mags can & do fire people for ideological deviation, and by firing Williamson, Atlantic identifies themselves as just as ideological as NR. (which... like... sure!)
