I think that's very much Yglesias's point. He's aware that no remotely reasonable person, himself included, is under the delusion that he's some sort of leftist firebrand.

Honestly, if The Atlantic maintained their expectations with respect to the quality of the work while also expanding the range of ideas they explore, I'd be quite happy with that. They had done a good job within the framework they constructed.

You have him confused with Megan McArdle. Yglesias was convinced by the liberal hawks but turned against the war soon after it started - all I think before he was at the Atlantic? Even when he was pro-war he wasn't for beating up protesters - though he was friends with McArdle.
