And Afghanistan. And Russia. And North Korea. The thing is Trump's foreign policy instincts are often good but he doesn't know how to make them into policy.

Like George W. Bush and Barack Obama, I don't think it's a bad idea for America to try and work with Russia on many issues.

Oh cmon. That’s not what he is actually proposing. And if it is, it’s not on the issues you want

Well, it's hard to know what he's proposing because he's so disengaged from policy. I just think that a Russia friendly policy is defensible given everything else USA has to deal with.

"It would be good if we got along with Russia" is a long way from "Trump is right on Russia," I think.

Trump's instincts are clear: The first thing he tried to do after getting an office was lift sanctions on Russia... Immediately after their espionage/propaganda offensive put him in office. Our good policies are in spite of Trump. http://www.newsweek.com/trump-white-house-secret-efforts-lift-russia-sanctions-putin-619508 …

i guess i would ask do we really want to be "friendly" with the country/leader who is currently on a murder spree that includes use of chemical weapons. Friendly for what purpose & at what cost

We should be more friendly towards a country that is aggressively trying to interfere in our elections and assassinates its enemies on our allies soil. Brilliant!

Problem is that a Russia-friendly policy depends on Russia being friendly in return. What's the basis for that assumption?

Every President in the past two decades has tried this, and in response, the head of the KGB turned Russia into a quasi-dictatorship, invaded Ukraine, and hurt our democracy. We should stop being friendly to Russia.

A friendly Russia policy will be possible once Putin stops killing spies on our allies’ soil, stops threatening to nuke Florida, stops interfering in our and other democratic elections, and gets out of Crimea. So basically, when Putin stops being Putin.

I agree with that and in fact have been arguing so for a long time. Mismatch between Trump's word & his administrations policy is the real problem.
