Memoirs are effing great. Don't deal with much after the war, though. I'm intrigued by Chernow, but am afraid he's gonna just gloss over or excuse Grant's wussing out on Reconstruction at the end

It starts strong, covers the war years well, and does a good job of explaining his record on civil rights as President. Can't help but feel like it ducks some of the more difficult questions as to the corruption of his administration, and of the Gilded Age in general.
