It would also make for an interesting conundrum, should Mueller decide in the course of his investigation that their blatant refusal to check him constituents bypassing the need to give a final report to them and just do the proceedings himself.

(And yes I realize that's probably likely not possible, but they should not be rewarded for refusing to check him by keeping the power to not check him).

The odds of Mueller not having a plan for what happens when he’s fired is around zero. I just don’t know how effective that plan will end up being.

Agreed. It’s called sealed indictments. They’re still there. But whether that matters in the long game, who knows?
