So Trump might be able to pardon via a tweet. Isn't it almost certain he'll do this when the chips are down?https://twitter.com/JennaMC_Laugh/status/979119582676963328 …

The smart play for Trump (not necessarily what he'll do) is not to fire Mueller but ride this thing out: let Mueller have his findings & then dare the congressional GOP to impeach & remove. They won't.

Worst case scenario for Trump: Dems win house & Senate in November. Then House will impeach. But Dems will still be around 15 votes shy of 67 they need in Senate to remove.

So let the House impeach. There's no way the Dems can pick up the 15 GOP Senators needed for removal. Ride it out: pardon the cronies (Manafort, Cohen etc.). What does Trump lose?

If his primary concern is business and legacy, he loses face?

Any future legacy will be only among hard-core GOP base. They'll rally to him all the more if impeached.

That's my point. Riding it out and using pardon power presumably undermines his ultimate desire to be loved by all and trade on his fame in business and TV going forward.

I'm positing a Trump who recognizes he'll never be loved by all & his only legacy will be among the wingnuts.

That's assuming a level of self-awareness I'm not sure he enjoys. But, riding it out and getting a few wins at this point is probably the least harmful thing he can do for himself.
