The conceptual analysis reading is fairly new. Everyone from Aristotle to Kant thought that their ethical works could make people lead better, more moral lives.

It's an interesting what they thought they were doing in the METAPHYSICS or first CRITIQUE, etc. but even there it's not clear it's conceptual analysis in modern (post Frege-Russell) sense.
