1. Yglesias is exactly right. Among the democracies America has a very narrow political spectrum & elite media is ever narrower. https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/978715282662404096 …

8. I do think that liberals and conservatives are too focused on opinion pages, when real meat of newspapers & magazines is reporting.

9. I think there's good reason for newspapers to hire right-of-center reporters. The good news is National Review has been good at training reporters that get hired elsewhere: Betsy Woodruff, Tim Alberta, Robert Costa.

10. I think the value of writers like Woodruff is they have connections with GOP that facilitate reporting on the right & they are also good reporters. That's what we need more of.

pretty much every left take on this, mine included, cites Douthat as the ur-example of the kind of conservative liberal publishers say they want

He’s the best out of that bunch by far. Frum is tarnished by Iraq and Young’s become a crank.

I like Frum. I tend to find Hoover people interesting. I even like Thiel. I overwhelmingly don't agree with them but their points are well-articulated and interesting. And, man, I was busy slamming this Kevin D. Williamson hire today as a long-time Atlantic reader.

One of my main critiques of the media is just a lack of intellectual diversity from the Left. Like, I don't consider myself a socialist but there is a lot of interesting stuff there. And why wouldn't I engage with that? We're trying to produce the best possible outcomes.

I am there for Coyne, Frum (but always remembering his context), Applebaum at times, but will pass on Young, and Douthat most of the time. I'm fine with open-minded, rigorous, intelligent arguments.

Remember Coyne's contexts too. Born in privilege but lectures us on making it on individual merit; and joined Lord Black's papers so that says something.
