2. It's telling that elite media tries to answer critique of lack of diversity by promoting Never Trump conservatives, which is a kind of Faux-diversity since most NT conservatives falls within elite consensus.

3. I value some of the Never Trump crowd because they have valuable hard-won insights into movement conservatism (
@RadioFreeTom,@davidfrum) but that's different than the intellectual diversity argument.Show this thread -
4. This is a fair point. "Never Trump" is broad category & runs from people well to the right of Trump (Williamson) to those much closer to center (Frum/Brooks).https://twitter.com/DouthatNYT/status/978719922812542977 …

5. But Williamson aside, the Never Trump people who get promoted tend to be on the more moderate end of things & in general opposing Trump is a kind of elite litmus test, a way of proving respectability.

6. I think way out of faux-diversity is to remove Trump as litmus test & look to writers from outside elite consensus: paleo-cons, theocrats, anarchists, socialists, radical feminists etc. Some more thoughts here:https://newrepublic.com/article/147240/myth-times-intellectual-diversity …

7. It's true that there are liberals & leftists who can't abide any right-of-center writer. But I know many liberals & leftists that admire Douthat, Caldwell, Applebaum, Frum, Andrew Coyne, Cathy Young, etc. https://twitter.com/TPCarney/status/978732163062431746 …

8. I do think that liberals and conservatives are too focused on opinion pages, when real meat of newspapers & magazines is reporting.

9. I think there's good reason for newspapers to hire right-of-center reporters. The good news is National Review has been good at training reporters that get hired elsewhere: Betsy Woodruff, Tim Alberta, Robert Costa.

10. I think the value of writers like Woodruff is they have connections with GOP that facilitate reporting on the right & they are also good reporters. That's what we need more of.

I'm sorry I don't understand this simile at all? What are you saying about Winona Ryder? I mean genuinely that went a mile over my head.
