I also think the trend is probably moving in the right direction, though it's a little hard to tell.https://twitter.com/jbarro/status/976107839285428224 …

I guess my question is where this problem ranks, say, in the top 50 problems facing America. I don’t think it makes the list.

Okay, what is the cutoff for problems I should be able to express an opinion about?

I’m not asking you to stop talking about it, I’m asking how big of a problem you think this is, because that seems like important context.

The main point my column today is that the existence of some other, larger problem is not a reason to ignore a problem. That logic can easily become a way to excuse your allies' misbehavior.http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/the-right-is-worse-than-the-left-on-free-speech-so-what.html …

In a different context, you're perfectly clear about how disproportionate media focus on an issue can create misinformation and terrible externalities, and I don’t think you find defenders of the media’s email coverage very persuasive. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/09/the-abnormalization-of-hillary-clinton.html …pic.twitter.com/p4u6t9b1P0

The difference is that the spread of these norms and protocols can do real harm to the left, and are not only worth criticizing, but need to be criticized.

Sure but there is a just as important countervailing need to characterize the problem proportionately, and you dismiss that concern as a deflection, when it’s really not a deflection at all.

I see this as a problem within progressive politics, and how conservatives exploit it in their messaging is a secondary concern to me.

I think that's an analytical mistake. Conservative exploitation is driving a big shift in public opinion which is already having dire consequences.https://twitter.com/DamonLinker/status/976126348413620227 …

Part of the reason that I want the Left to deal with this issue is to *reduce* opportunities for conservative exploitation. Perhaps there are less public ways to have that discussion, though at the moment I’m unsure what they would be.

Admitting we have a problem is the first step to fixing it, even if that admission provides ammunition to our enemies. Though I guess one could argue that we’ve done enough “admitting” on this particular issue. What’s the next step?
