1. Why aren't more Republican lawmakers speaking out against Trump? In fact, why are most protecting him? Some history might help. Compare Ronald Reagan & Howard Baker during Watergate.

8. After Watergate, Reagan's star rose, while Howard Baker's more moderate version of Republicanism faded. Reagan had made the right bet: sticking to a sinking president makes sense in polarized, tribalist polity.

Did Reagan understand that or was he just one of those partisan Republicans who hated liberals more than he disliked Nixon? Wm. F. Buckley stuck by McCarthy to some degree bc he argued that McCarthy's enemies were worse than McCarthy.

All this was before the arrival of social media. Tactics like Reagan’s may not work today because people will have access to old tweets, etc., that can shine a light on enabling politicians.

Yeah. But raises the interesting question: why don’t partisan republicans realize such complicity is unprincipled, untrustworthy, and potentially quite dangerous to the future of democracy?

If a con man tells me he’s on my team, while walking away with the deed to my home...I will EVENTUALLY catch on. No? Why don’t we see that w/ Trump’s base (or partisan republicans in Nixon’s time)? Astute analysis though. Just begs this question, imho.
