I got a degree in psychology from a Canadian university and Peterson's name never came up. You can be influential within your area of specialty and still be obscure within your field at large, let alone the national or international conversation.

Right. And I would add whatever fame Peterson has in his discipline doesn't seem relevant for his current work as a self-help guru for troubled young men.

Calling him an obscure academic contrasts his relatively low-profile academic life and his new status as bestselling author and internationally feted public intellectual. Every Peterson piece sets up this contrast. It's not even pejorative.
