The implication here is that widespread social suppression of communist speech, gay speech (and I'd add atheist speech) until recently was not really a free speech problem. That's absurd.

The interesting question this raises is whether most people can separate their tolerance for speech from their feelings about the content of speech. I think that separation is rare.
