I'm a classical liberal, which means that I believe (like Locke) that Natives have no rights & their land should be plundered, (like Mill) that well-to-do should have more votes than the poor & (like Tocqueville) in French imperialism. No wait, that's not right...

I find it genuinely bizarre you keep harping on this. John Rawls very clearly saw his own “liberal” view as flowing from and part of the intellectual tradition connecting those same liberal thinkers. Did you do this much performative harumphing at “Political Liberalism”?

Do you really expect everyone who self-applies “progressive” to add an asterisk to a throat-clearing repudiation of eugenics every time they use the term? I don’t, because that would be ridiculous.

It's the "classical" that bothers me more than the "liberalism." If people said they were "classical progressives" or "classical New Dealers" I'd have the same problem.

If they didn’t use “classical” most people would peg them as occupying the left side of the liberal/conservative dichotomy instead of being for free speech and free markets. Again, you’re the only one I’ve ever encountered who is confused by “classical” in this way

Sure, I understand that Hayekian usage. But term now increasingly used by people not really in libertarian tradition (Max Boot, Jennifer Rubin, Jordan Peterson). So I feel like it's worth pushing back agains it & asking for clarity.

The problem is classical liberals today aren't even necessarily proponents of liberal democracy. In a liberal democracy, voting is sacred right & everyone can easily vote.

If they aren't going to be pro-democracy, we modern liberals will carry that torch alone. If free markets matter more than *voting as a right*, then classical libs are our pre-modern forebears. Our ancestors.

TBH, they rather remind me of liberal conservative French Orléanist politicians like Adolphe Thiers, who managed to be horrified by Napoleon III while also completely unwilling to recognize that their own policies had paved the way for him.

Jordan Peterson seems to describe himself as a Jungian Darwinist as much as a classical liberal, but his views about speech and truthseeking seem very much in the liberal tradition

The Jung thing is particularly mystifying. "There is a set of symbols with universal human meaning" is an idea I can't believe survives first contact with other humans

They means modernist universalist liberalism in opposition to post modern and identitarian LW or populist RW. They come in more LW (more welfare, sometime antitheist) and RW(more intervention, less tax) versions.
