I will grant that I understand why, say, Hayek called himself a classical liberal or a whig. But now term is used by many people who aren't really Hayekians (say Max Boot).

Well, obviously it was absurd for Max Boot to lay claim to the label. It was absurd for King Hassan II to call himself a socialist too. Sometimes people toss around words inappropriately.

Right, but there has been a real upsurge lately of people calling themselves "classical liberals" -- people with nothing in common with Hayek, let alone Locke or Mill. My tweet was directed against that.
