Firstly, language & political thought evolves. Secondly, why do you want to control what others call themselves?https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/971969485753077760 …

So can you not call yourself a "Leftist" if you aren't a Montagnard? Clearly there's consistent themes in these terms but the details clearly change by place and as new info is learned. To be a progressive do I need to complain about Standard Oil?

The reason I like the label is that I don't feel like I have to believe everything Locke, Mill, Smith, et al believed due to their own principles debunking their opining at times. E.g. Your race doesn't change if you're an individual or not.

Also ur music analogy reminded me of this Futurama clip which should explain the evolution argument: https://youtu.be/wlfE_IplWAU

"Language evolves" is my favorite euphemism for lying. Yes, it does, but not all mutations are improvements. And, truth be told, spin doctors who practice political identity theft see it as intelligent design.

If you'll excuse my saying: Classical Liberalism was the idea that if we thought about ideas they'd 'evolve' to become better. That idea has itself been proven to be subject to the very same winnowing it identifies, proving itself.

Why don't you switch to 'historical' and let the rest of us use classical to refer to the 20th century?

You are getting confused between (a) the important components of a political view, which are entailed logical from its core commitments and (b) views the merely happen to be possessed by some prominent exponent of the view, which are accidental to the core commitments.

If you can't (or won't) make that distinction, you may as well believe that classical liberals should give up on international air travel to be consistent with the fact that John Stuart Mill believed the best way to get from London to Sydney was by steamship.
