Unlike all other political traditions, which are marked by a clean heterogeneity requiring no such selection?

I mean, there's a pretty clear split between two ongoing & evolving liberal traditions, and it isn't exactly absurd to call the older one "classical."

In fairness we should also consign "progressive" to this dustbin.

What do you think would be a better, more accurate term? Some of the interest in reclaiming "classical liberalism" seems to come from a desire to clearly disavow that which is illiberal. What is a better term for making the distinction between the liberal and the illiberal?

That would be possible if the term "liberal" meant at least roughly what it used to. But the brand was stolen by illiberal authoritarian bullies, and now means virtually its opposite. "Classical liberal" = actual literal liberal. This isn't so hard to understand.
