You're loading the dice by only talking about the US. Historically, the most dangerous illiberalism in Germany or in Russia or China didn't come from centrists - it came from far right and far left.

Sure, but that's because I think American history is far more relevant for gauging what is likely to happen in America than German or Russian history.
