But centrists (by your definition) have essentially always ruled in America. So of course the most prominent examples of government illiberalism have come from centrists.

Jeet is right: Centrist FDR's internment for Japanese Americans, Robert E Lee's treasonous war, Barack Obama's drones, American extremism comes from the center as often as from the extreme right (never from the left somehow).

Actually incorrect. Germany's historical extremism was exactly Center extremist in 1932. Which is why all the modern folks argue about whether it was right or left extreme. It was both.
