1. The problem with this formulation is that it sees illiberalism & extremism as rooted only in far left & far right. But historically the most dangerous illiberalism is from centrists.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/971802635912269829 …

Debs is the only comparison? Really? Why not vs TR? Or LaFollette? Or does centrist just just a pejorative for liberal (which in many ways wouldn’t apply to Wilson anyway)? As for MLK/Malcolm X…seriously?

What's your issue with MLK/Malcolm X comparison?

And “Wallace” singular made me chuckle.

If it is so easy, was Malcolm X to the left of Kennedy or to the right ? I'd say a devout advocate of traditional morality who praised self reliance and segregation was a reactionary. I suppose it is possible to claim he was a leftist, but I can't imagine how.

I think the core problem is if you’re starting out w a concept of “centrism” that holds both Joe Lieberman & Chris Murphy—IOW, all non-Southern Dems, but giving a lot of weight to Lieberman & the DLC—you can’t find a clean definition that goes back any further than 1968.

To be more serious, I think your assertion that centrists repress is true by definition if you define the center as the then current establishiment including the government of the day. People without power don't abuse power. We can't know what Debs would have done with Wilson
-
No, he's clearly defining it in terms of the political spectrum of the US at the time. Kennedy and Truman were centrists. Reagan or FDR would not be.

While Dana is seeing intra-Democrat dog whistles that aren't there, Jeet has made a foolish and inexplicable decision to make "centrist" mean "wielding power".
