      1. The problem with this formulation is that it sees illiberalism & extremism as rooted only in far left & far right. But historically the most dangerous illiberalism is from centrists.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/971802635912269829 …

And there's also no question that extremism on the right is a far bigger problem than extremism on the left.

      2. The most dangerous attacks on free speech in modern American history (1919 Red Scare & McCarthyism) both had support from mainstream, centrist figures.

      3. Woodrow Wilson (mainstream progressive liberal) jailed people for their beliefs. The roots of McCarthyism were in Truman's loyalty oaths program & coddling of J. Edgar Hoover.

I think the word 'extremist' is useless or misleading. Putting policy on a spectrum encourages people to think 'moderates' are the only 'sane' ones and represent 'compromise'.

It feels like we focus too much on political spectrum placement, and not nearly enough on the personalities occupying that spectrum.

Again, these men can only be construed as *centrists* in terms of the majority American political climate of their time. From a leftist perspective they were all conservative liberal bourgeois, far to the right of any recognizable *center.*

Heck, you can go back to the Revolution which was financed by well-known mainstream figures who really had more issues with taxes than freedom. We haven't changed that much.

Adenauer, in Cologne, and von Papen in Berlin were both centrists that paved the way for the NSADP seizing power.

I think there's a logical fallacy here. You can't use the bad shit done by centrists as vindication for extremist positions. Centrists have just had more opportunity to do bad things. We've never truly seen an extremist in power in North America.

Of course. When centrists participate in illiberalism, it is by definition, mainstream and therefore most powerful and deadly.
