      1. The problem with this formulation is that it sees illiberalism & extremism as rooted only in far left & far right. But historically the most dangerous illiberalism is from centrists.https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/971802635912269829 …

And there's also no question that extremism on the right is a far bigger problem than extremism on the left.

      2. The most dangerous attacks on free speech in modern American history (1919 Red Scare & McCarthyism) both had support from mainstream, centrist figures.

      3. Woodrow Wilson (mainstream progressive liberal) jailed people for their beliefs. The roots of McCarthyism were in Truman's loyalty oaths program & coddling of J. Edgar Hoover.

While these are examples of illiberalism, would these example likely have been far worse with an "extremist" at the helm?

Referring to Woodrow Wilson as a *mainstream progressive liberal* Does nothing to illuminate what Wilson was or what that phrase meant in turn of the century US politics. Indeed, given what that phrase suggests in our current moment, this description of Wilson is deceptive.

I think you have to look closer at the Dies Committee and the work of JB Matthews in the 1930s. They weren't centrists and were behind handing the Justice Department the first lists of over 1000 names in the Roosevelt administration for prosecution.

Progressive? No. Wilson was a racist who took federal government jobs from black Americans. He set back progress. That was far from progressive. He was typical for his time and cannot be measured by the post modern milieux.
