I think you have to look closer at the Dies Committee and the work of JB Matthews in the 1930s. They weren't centrists and were behind handing the Justice Department the first lists of over 1000 names in the Roosevelt administration for prosecution.

Progressive? No. Wilson was a racist who took federal government jobs from black Americans. He set back progress. That was far from progressive. He was typical for his time and cannot be measured by the post modern milieux.
