The problem here is the conflation of "classical liberal" with "libertarian" https://twitter.com/PhilWMagness/status/968702961672171520 …

Both terms as they are currently used will finish Alt-Right anyway. Someone coined the word "Alt-Lib" to describe these people. Though he cast too wide a net when looking for examples, he wasn't wrong: https://twitter.com/OmanReagan/status/958150463601258496 …

Also look up that person's tweets where he describes that the Alt-Right recruitment passes through a fake 'liberal' centrism to indoctrinate and push further rightward. He saw it first-hand.https://twitter.com/MrHappyDieHappy/status/967887589612097536 …

The alt-right's primary recruitment pool are the New Centre. These people often identify online as 'classical liberals', 'libertarian-right' 'centrists' and like Trump a hell of a lot. Yes, the online political spectrum has been so debased that TRUMP IS THE NEUTRAL SETTING.

Isn’t neoliberalism the truest descendent of classical liberalism these days? Or European parties like the Lib Dems or FDP?

There's been a deliberate effort for years by libertarians to co-opt the term "classical liberals" - as if the intellectual architects of liberalism hadn't gone on at great length about the importance of a strong state to regulate markets and prevent abuses between citizens.

A lot of alt-right Youtube thinkers do that too. It allows the glib "I used to be a liberal" or "liberals lost me" or "this is how you should liberal." The trolling worked for a while. But now we've seen it a bit, I think/hope it's less effective.

Serious question. What in your view differentiates a classical liberal from a libertarian in the context of 19th Century politics: i.e., were there any figures of that era whom you would associate more with libertarianism and why?

It would seem to me that the exercise is a bit like trying to pick the Amish out of a crowd of farmers in the 1850's: the things that most set them apart didn't yet exist.

Modern libertarianism is an ethos dedicated more to rejection of government out of privileged self-interest rather than the liberty interests of oppressed groups.
