That's not necessarily the same as "befriend" but Quinn Norton's philosophy of refusal to close off fellowship is a very recognisable and not even all that uncommon Christian tradition.

When you're starting from a religion that was so absolutely explicit about loving your enemies and befriending the Roman soldier and tax collector, it's not really a surprise that some people have always taken this message seriously and literally.

Fair enough. Although I think befriending Nazis to convert or deradicalize them is different from what Norton was doing (since I see no evidence of attempts to change).

I argue with my friends about politics too but that doesn't mean I'm trying to convert or deradicalize them.
