I don't think it was a coincidence that Trump went after Rand Paul first. I suspected Rand's thinking was ascendant in the party. Trump's advisers must have informed him that he had to kneecap Rand first so he could take on that mantle.

The folks on the Left that want to form alliances with anti-war (i.e. isolationist) conservatives don't understand that these people also have all sorts of baggage (racism, free market fundamentalism) that makes it impossible to form a cohesive alliance with them.
