It is notable that most of the NRA's public messaging isn't even about firearms anymore. It's mostly culture war agitprop about fake news, Trump, obedience to the flag, feral leftists, socialists, antifa street gangs and other similar incitement. This is for a clear reason.

Alternatively, by insisting on a no gun restrctions policy, the NRA has forced it early into an ever increasing reliance on scare tactics and demagoguery that it no longer can appeal to any non-GOP ppl, rather than by compromising and increasing its diverse political base

That's upside down. GOP is totally aligned with the NRA agenda, thanks to NRA's $$$ carrots and "we'll primary you" sticks.

There’s an extremism death spiral where reasonable people are repelled by extremists which increases the pH, driving out more and more until the environment is too caustic for anyone but a corrosive base.

I don't know that this is happening to the NRA, but it does seem to be starting to the GOP.

I'd agree WRT most groups, but the NRA has been one of the main forces pushing that polarization. They're the horse, not the cart.

They were pretty much taken over by culture war types in the 80s, and everything since then has been based on pushing that.
