Apparently the early reception of the novel noted its weird sympathy for European colonialism - the French inspector is quite unrealistic given their actual role in the colonial system - and it only become seen as a major anti-war novel later

sure if you don't recall that their administration of empire led to WWI and WWII. Also, any separating the US and British empire is basically splitting hairs.
