1.I don't know if this is genuine naivety or just rhetoric but this tweet represents a view of the conservative movement that is woefully at odds with history.https://twitter.com/bariweiss/status/966781463365636101 …

I know I should be over it, but the speed at which the organized conservative movement became the ideological home of Marion Le Pen, Seb Gorka, Nigel Farage, Dinesh D'Souza and their ilk remains shocking to me.

      2. The assumption here is that there was a time when D'Souza wasn't part of the conservative movement. That hasn't been true since he jointed Dartmouth Review as undergraduate in 1980 at age 19.https://twitter.com/bariweiss/status/966781463365636101 …

      4. At Dartmouth D'Souza also outed 2 gay students. Then he flourished as conservative pundit, writing for National Review, Wall Street Journal, American Spectator etc. & serving as AEI fellow. He's still on National Review masthead.

      5. But D'Souza came at late stage of conservatism. Consider National Review, founded in 1955 by editors who, to a person, supported Joseph McCarthy.

      6. Le Pen & Farage are bad, yes. But William F. Buckley's brother-in-law (who was also Barry Goldwater's speechwriter) upheld Franco's Spain as the ideal Christian state.

      9. I could go on & on. We all know that. Instead of that, let's listen to the excellent @michaelbd, writing in National Review, debunking the idea of pristine conservative past:https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/02/conservatism-decline-not-really/ …

To be fair I much preferred Dougherty when he was at The Week. Much of his National Review output reads like he is forced, or believes he is forced, to act as a team player. Even occasional pieces of dissent like this one cannot erase that impression.

Calling this a "piece of dissent" misses Dougherty's point, IMHO

The moral of this Dougherty piece is that working with racists fascists etc. is just part of the eternal wild quest of fighting the Soulless So if you're too prissy to get your hands dirty and work with Trump then FU (he argues)

Have we all forgotten Phyllis Schlafly? Pearlstein's Before the Storm is a pretty good history of American conservatism post 1964 Goldwater defeat. In retrospect, defeat of Equal Rights Amendment was probably high water market of postwar liberalism.

Truer words than "I could go on and on" were never tweeted. You have demonstrated that from time to time. Also good link to the excellent article in http://nationalreview.com  (I will never ever forgive Trump for making me type that).
