1. Is Russia meddling so serious that we need to launch a new Cold War?* *(spoiler alert: no)

From this article: Instead, a loose collective of Russians, with incredibly meager resources....., I thought reports indicated resources of 1 million+ a month. If correct I don't see how anyone can catergorize this as "meager".

Yeah, the story is “our media landscape is utterly broken, and Russia exploited that”, the first part is the crux.

Russians tweeting memes is no more influential that any other foreigner expressing their views prior to the election. And perhaps less so. Consider articles like these: https://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2016/07/14/a-european-take-on-trump/ … https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2016/03/donald-trump-europe-election/472113/ … https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/across-europe-revulsion-at-trump-but-little-idea-of-what-to-do-about-him/2016/10/05/bafb90bc-8a4d-11e6-8cdc-4fbb1973b506_story.html?utm_term=.1645785eab1c …

it's not people tweeting memes, it's coordinated botnets shaping social media trending topics and search result rankings

This article disappoints. The evidence for such a weighty thesis is thin at best. This is one of those ‘I feel smart by taking a very thin and unpopular opinion’. I hopes it’s self-gratifying cause it’s not productive.

1) our problems don’t mean that we shouldn’t defend ourselves 2) WE ARE AT WAR. We were attacked. Putin already made the decision to start a new Cold War. Our only choice is whether we fight back. 3) You’re just jealous no one hacks or attacks Canada.

I’d agree if you’d accept this revision: “The problem is not just that American democracy was hacked, but also that it is hackable—that there was enough fragility in American democracy for a few crude memes to have an outsized influence.”

Sure, although my preference is for prioritizing the domestic half of the equation, since that's going to be the bigger problem in the long run and it's closer to home.
