I get the point people want to make here, but blithe assumption that it was pure IP and not the specific movies not-Sony made seems careless to me. Sony could well have NOT made all that money even had they made the movies.

Sony could have handled Iron Man as well as Fox handled the Fantastic Four, and we would not be having this conversation.

$15M was a lot of money back then

It's about $100 million in current terms. The Ant-Man movie made $105 million. So Kirby was right.

Yes. Kirby envisioned the long lines in front of movie theaters long before CGI etc. He sensed intuitively what was going to happen.

$15 million in 1968 dollars is about $100 million in 2018 dollars. Ant-Man grossed $518 million worldwide, on a budget of $142 million. Wikipedia says estimated profit is $104 million - or, almost exactly what Goodman sold all of Marvel for.
-
So Kirby was eerily on target there.

So many factors determine the price: other prospective buyers, potential buyers perceived ability to earn value from the property, opportunity cost, etc. It seems everyone is surprised at how successful marvel has been, especially compared to DC, for example.
