      1. If Jordan Peterson does resemble an outsider artist it is not the great & wonderful Henry Darger but the embittered Dave Sim, creator of Cerebus the Aardvark.https://twitter.com/willmenaker/status/965633591559454720 …

C'mon. I'm not the biggest Sim fan, but he has real talent and genuinely brought new things to the comics medium. (And at one point he could really tell a story, too.) Peterson's got a long way to go before he's worthy of filling Sim's ink bottle, much less resemble him.

I'm fairly sure the latter. So far as I can see, the emotional characteristics he ascribes to women basically square with the character of Jaka. That is, she's a well-rounded character — within the limits of what Sim allows himself to believe is possible for a woman.

I'd lean towards the former given what his last ex-girlfriend has said about him. He didn't start out a raving misogynist whackadoo; it was a process, and a weird one.

I gather there were a lot of drugs involved, and at least one stay in a psychiatric hospital.

Surprisingly not. He just started reading the Bible more and more, initially in a jokey way and then more obsessively, and got weird and distant and quiet before the relationship just kind of... ended. It's honestly pretty sad.

That's interesting. Sim's story for the genesis of the 300-issue plan had to do with him being institutionalised against his will after some kind of overdose. Is the ex in question his former wife?

The institutionalization was early in his career. The turn toward misogyny about half way through. Interestingly first half of Cerebus engages with feminism with a great deal of sympathy.

It does! And then the turn against feminism is very slick; it fits structurally, while the first half stands on its own. I remember Michael Moorcock was the first person I heard of to turn against Sim for his anti-feminism; that was while the book was in the 140s, I think …
