that's true, because I said it's happening now, not that it was happening...what, 15 years ago Jane? ish?

Jane's younger than me! I graduated 2006 and back then, I had a weird addiction to psychotic far-right radio personalities who were making the exact same claims about the sort of university I was then-presently attending. This is a constant trope and it's exaggerated.

I was at Michigan when the first big wave of PC media stories hit in 1990, and I had the distinct impression that "political correctness" was getting less prevalent even as press coverage of it increased.

I also didn't think PC had much to do with the professoriate; but parts of the right found it convenient to tack it onto their preexisting "tenured radicals" narrative.

Agree, it was a student-driven phenomenon and probably peaked in Ann Arbor around '88-'89. Extant but in decline by the time the national media tuned in.

It's almost as if PC is a small phenomenon involving a small number of students who quickly grow out of it but is hugely magnified by elite journalists!

Meanwhile elite media have staffers who think that saying "immigrants get the job done" in reference to a daughter of immigrants is just like the Japanese internment

And those elite media think that being criticized for saying so is a sign of “civilization’s end."

Being called a racist and a ghoul is not "criticism."

Yes, yes it is. A lot of criticism is mean-spirited, especially online. Something you yourself have written about extensively. But it is not a signpost for the end of civilization.

Yep. Nor is it "fascist" (as Bret Stephens complained about criticism of another New York Times tweeter).

Calling people "garbage" is not that different from calling them "vermin".
