I’ve just started so can’t comment we’ll, but am not sure they’re so comparable. White’s periodization is longer and his scope broader.

I take it Foner is considered good? I've been meaning to dive into reading about Reconstruction.

Foner is the gold standard.

It’s more than Reconstruction, covering 1865-96. It’s smart, humane and engaging, both in theme and the writing—a classic.

Much stronger focus on westward expansion & immgration that Foner & goes to the election of 1896. Essentially argues that the Republican vision after the war was to make every town in America like Lincoln’s Springfield, IL. Solid book that complements but doesn’t replace Foner.
