Much conservative commentary is based on the idea that those directly impacted by issues (e.g., terrorism, immigration, and crime in big cities) don’t know what’s good for them.

It’s the opposite of Identity Politics. They are of the firm belief that only those who are not impacted by an issue have the objectivity to correctly assess the situation. They then come up with a solution that, by coincidence, benefits themselves.

I think in general Americans lack a Theory of Mind when it comes to International relations. Anything that doesn't align with US interests is treated as irrational.
